Burdoc Farms Celebrates Its 500th Wedding

Every wedding at Burdoc Farms is special, but this summer brought a milestone worth celebrating on its own: our 500th wedding. Five hundred couples have now said “I do” on this land, and fittingly, the 500th couple was local to Christian County, right here where it all began. Reaching this number is an honor and a reflection of everything this family farm has poured into creating a wedding venue unlike any other in Western Kentucky.

The Shepherd family has owned this land since the 1940s, when it operated as a traditional farm that raised beef cattle and grew tobacco. Over the years, it grew into something more: a conservation farm, a wildlife habitat, a certified tree farm, and a place devoted to caring for the land. When a friend asked to hold their wedding here years ago, a new chapter began, and it’s one that has since welcomed hundreds of couples to celebrate amongst the fields and forests.

For owner Sara Shepherd, the farm is deeply personal. As she puts it, “this is our legacy.” It’s a legacy shaped by family, including her late husband, whose vision helped make Burdoc Farms what it is today. His dream lives on in every ceremony held here, and Sara’s own children have returned to the farm to help carry that work forward.

What started as a single wedding in an old tobacco barn has grown into a destination. Today, Burdoc Farms hosts 60 to 80 weddings a year, and couples travel from far beyond Kentucky to get here. We’ve hosted couples who flew in from as far as South Africa, England, and Dubai, and from across the country, too, with celebrations bringing families from California, Hawaii, Alaska, and New York.

Why do they come so far? Because this is a place worth traveling to. A destination wedding used to mean a beach, but now it can mean 700 acres of Kentucky countryside, where the setting itself becomes part of the story.

Reaching 500 weddings is the result of years of attention to detail and an authentic love for what we do. As a family-owned and operated barn wedding venue, we offer couples a personal experience on a farm we call home.
